06:00 pm - Dynamite and Guns result in Conspiracy convictions
Dr. Frank Stearns Giese was a former World War II US Navy Captain in Naval Intelligence. He died August 6, 2006. He was once a national contact for the 1965 Students for a Democratic Society anti-Vietnam War protest in Washington, DC. The US Supreme Court upheld his Conspiracy to bomb government buildings conviction after 12 years of appeals.

Dr. Giese's fingerprints and several other defendants were on a book he owned that was found in a Seattle safe house. It was with bomb making pamphlets, urban warfare manuals, and a 68-stick dynamite bomb. The Government couldn't prove he put it there. Dr. Giese testified he had given the book to Max Severin. He could not prove that Severin had put the book at a house he had never visited.

Radical Education Project Book Center in Portland, Oregon was owned by Dr. Giese. It's competitor was the American Opinion Bookstore.

John Birch Society & Police Intelligence

Portland Police Intelligence Agent Winfield Falk, a dedicated member of the John Birch Society, coordinated surveillance operations of radical organizations including the Northwest Liberation Front. Prior to NLF existence Officer Falk investigated Dr. Frank Stearns Giese while he worked as a prison volunteer for alleged connections with the Patriot Party and the Calvin Dow Defense Committee. Patriot Party member Susan Louise Stoner and Dr. Giese operated Portland Prisoner Support from the Radical Education Project Bookcenter.

Government Denied Electronic Surveillance on NLF

FBI, ATF, and other agencies investigating the Northwest Liberation Front claimed there was no electronic surveillance of the suspects. Their files do indicate that they watched suspects houses, their businesses, followed their vehicles, wrote down license plate numbers, and even passively watched them commit a bank robbery. The FBI may have tapped their phones but could not use the conversations as evidence in court because they lacked a search warrant. They could only use what they heard as investigative leads.
